Shell and slat armour was utilised from classical antiquity well into the Middle Ages. There are some examples where scale armour was also employed by the Vikings. This tradition may have been imported from the Byzantine Empire. The scale armour may be worn separately or over chain mail. It can be easily repaired with loose parts and adjusted to size.
