一九八九年达赖喇嘛对我说，佛教是一种“无神论”宗教。佛不是神。藏传佛教是藏人至高无上的信仰，达赖喇嘛是藏人心目中的圣人。无论达赖喇嘛是否掌握政治权力，达赖喇嘛作为宗教领袖在藏人心目中有不可动摇的崇高地位。中共对达赖喇嘛的攻击，也是对藏人信仰的攻击。二00八年三月事件后，北京没有从政策的根本上寻找事件发生的原因，毫无根据地将其说成是“达赖集团有组织、有预谋、精心策划的分裂活动”。加上藏区掌握大权的贪官污吏借“反分裂”之名，极力掩盖藏区普遍存在人权侵害、文化语言歧视、环境破坏等种种问题。北京在对达赖喇嘛的攻击逐步升级的同时，加强对藏区寺庙的政治控制，对许多具有崇高地位的寺庙实行排查、关门整顿、来自外地的云游僧人被驱赶，所有寺庙被迫开展“社会主义、爱国主义教育”。北京对藏区的高压政策和对达赖喇嘛的攻击，使愈来愈多的藏人感到绝望。在中国境内的藏人，愈来愈把自己没有宗教自由和没有人权保障，与达赖喇嘛年复一年不能回到自己家园连在一起。这种绝望的体现是，不到两年时间，藏区连续发生至少二十起藏人自焚事件，自焚的藏人高喊着“让达赖喇嘛回到家园”而痛苦地死去。
